UBCM has advanced correspondence to new RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, expressing concerns with the RCMP’s proposed Auxiliary Constable uniform. UBCM and the Local Government Contract Management Committee (LGCMC) are requesting a new uniform that better conveys the professionalism and authority held by Auxiliary Constables.?
The proposed uniform predominantly displays the word “volunteer,” with few identifiers that say “auxiliary.” UBCM believes that adopting a more professional uniform may, among other things, help citizens better realize the importance of the position of Auxiliary Constable. Auxiliaries perform a number of key community safety duties, including public safety education, traffic control and assisting at major events.

In December 2016, following a series of reviews, the RCMP announced that its Auxiliary Program (formerly known as the Auxiliary Constable Program) would move to a tiered model, consistent with the results of a UBCM membership survey. A new uniform represents one component of the shift to a new Auxiliary model.

UBCM will continue to liaise with the RCMP regarding this issue through the RCMP LGCMC.
