BC Green Party Leader, Dr. Andrew Weaver, implored the UBCM membership to hear and respond to the abundance of scientific warnings and to work to renew the foundations of BC’s economy in the face of the deepening climate crisis.

Weaver detailed the environmental and economic risks of climate change, saying that “between 20 and 50% of the world’s species, almost certainly including the iconic Fraser River Sockeye” will become extinct this century.

The BC Green caucus has been working with the NDP government to develop a clean growth strategy for BC. Weaver emphasized the need for such a strategy to be regionalized and developed in partnership with indigenous peoples. Research papers exploring such a strategy were issued this summer. It is expected the first phase of the clean growth strategy released in the fall.

“Building healthy, safe secure communities needs to be prioritized in a changing world,” said Weaver. “I believe we can do it, and I hope you do too.”
